Then there is the problem with plastic. Like trash, plastic is also a daunting problem to manage. Globally humans make nearly 40 million metric tonnes of plastic annually. It is estimated that 5 to 15 million metric tonnes enter our oceans every year. We have all seen the continent sized floating islands of plastic that are choking our oceans and waterways. China was the largest recycler of plastics in the world (over 70% of all recycled plastics), but they stopped accepting any plastics in 2018. Now 92% of all plastics made also goes to the landfill where it stays for hundreds of years.
